Philips publishes latest sustainability performance

Philips has published its latest information on sustainability performance. The results show that in 2009, among other things, Philips:

  • increased sales of Green Products to nearly 31 per cent of overall sales – up from 23 per cent in 2008
  • introduced nearly 800 new Green Products to the market during the year – a nine-fold increase over 2008
  • invested more than 400 million euros in Green Innovations, on track for a cumulative total of one billion euro to be invested by 2012
  • reduced total emissions in absolute terms down to 1.9 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalents – a cut in its carbon footprint of ten per cent.
The sustainability performance highlights also show that while Philips’s Employee Engagement Index – a measure of the overall level of employee engagement – dropped one point to 68 per cent in 2009, diversity and inclusion improved, with 35 per cent of employees now female, one point up from 2008. Of 60 newly appointed executives in 2009, 17 per cent were female, and women now comprise 10 per cent of executives – double the figure in 2005.

Lost workday injuries cases decreased substantially during the year – down by 34 per cent compared with 2008 – while the Netherlands-based company performed a record number of 858 supplier audits in 2009 under its Supplier Sustainability Involvement Programme.  A total of 494 audits focused on resolving ‘zero-tolerance’ issues, most of which were resolved within 90 days of identification.

Under the programme name EcoVision5, Philips also announced today its 2015 sustainability targets, based on the global trends to which the company can offer meaningful solutions. The new targets ‘broaden Philips’ approach to sustainability well beyond the ecological footprint’, in line with the company’s Health and Well-being strategy.
