13 Yorkshire organisations unite on green agenda |
||||
| Eleven top Yorkshire companies, the Regional Development Agency and Leeds’ first Green Flag school, Gateways have launched a major new initiative to increase co-operation between business and education to raise awareness of climate change. The RDA’s subsidiary, CO2 Sense Yorkshire, gold sponsor npower, silver sponsors Asda, Cobbetts, Mason Hardy, Northern Foods and Wilson Power Solutions are fronting the innovative Green Gateways Business Club at Gateways School, Harewood, North Leeds to cascade knowledge to businesses large and small. There will also be speakers regarding regional initiatives in business and science across the environmental agenda including KPMG, Leeds Bradford International Airport, NG Bailey, The United Bank of Carbon and Yorkshire Bank. The series of four events, starting on March 11th, has been created to work across tiers of business, calling on small and medium sized enterprises, as well as individuals to follow the lead of the best major corporates in improving environmental standards for the next generation. The personally invited, executive audience, includes major utilities, thought-leaders, industry managers and others from, predominantly, the West Yorkshire area. Headmistress Yvonne Wilkinson applauded the forward-looking companies for helping raise the bar on this urgent issue. She said: “The Green Gateways Business Club brings together the leading governmental organisations in climate change, our region’s largest corporates, businesses of all sizes, scientists and our thought-leading school with a common aim. We have a duty to lead on this and other urgent issues – working together to set a framework of knowledge and the highest standards, for success.” Joanne Pollard, Chief Executive of CO2 Sense, Yorkshire, part of the development agency, Yorkshire Forward, said: “With businesses facing challenges from both the economy and the changing environment, it’s more important than ever for companies to work together to find ways of reducing carbon emissions while growing their businesses. As CEO of CO2Sense Yorkshire, I see hundreds of inspiring examples of how organisations in the region are tackling these problems head-on. The Green Gateways business club is a welcome opportunity for sharing these great ideas with both regional companies and the next generation of business leaders at Gateways School.” Gold Sponsor, Dave Lewis, Head of Business Energy Services at npower said: "After the success of Gateways school in our national Climate Cops competition we wanted to continue to engage with businesses in the Yorkshire area. They need the support of businesses with knowledge of the Carbon Reduction Commitment that is coming into law this April, in terms of getting the information they need to provide to government and the timelines surrounding this legislation." Paula Widdowson, Director of Corporate Social Responsibility, Northern Foods, who is driving the initiative said: " Our bottom line has benefitted to the tune of £1m from the environmental initiatives we have put in place. That progress has come from co-operative working with other businesses, a learning journey we would like to pass on to others - be they major businesses or the next generation that needs to learn to exploit the opportunities of climate change."
